- Persistent Smell. Area rugs that sit in high humidity rooms develop mold overtime, area rugs in cooler rooms still have a chance of developing mildew. Either way, if you’re unable to rid your rug of the odor, it’s time for a new one. Another smell indicator is if you’re allergy symptoms are growing worse because that means the rug has collected too many allergens and pollen which are agitating your allergens.
Although you can perform a routine cleaning on the rug, vacuuming it will keep down the chances of a smell developing or unattractive wear.
